I · Horn of Africa

Horn of Africa today

Yemen’s civil war is now a Horn of Africa story too — more than 2,000 people have fled by boat to Djibouti in two weeks. Sudan, Ethiopia and Eritrea produced no independently confirmed new development in this window.

1. Djibouti / refugees. The UN estimates more than 80,000 people have been displaced inside Yemen in the past two weeks of fighting, including over 2,000 who fled by boat across the Bab el-Mandeb to Djibouti. The inflow is a direct, physical spillover of Yemen’s war onto Horn of Africa territory, not just a shipping-lane story. — NBC News; PBS NewsHour, 12–14 September.

Elsewhere in the Horn — no new development on Sudan’s Darfur front, Ethiopia–Eritrea tensions, or Somalia/Somaliland cleared this briefing’s verification standard in the 14–16 September window; see this week’s Horn Update and Great Power Watch issues for the fuller picture on Sudan’s arms-embargo track and the Ethiopia–Egypt–Eritrea triangle.

II · Middle East

Middle East today

Yemen’s death toll from this month’s fighting has reached 150 civilians. In Lebanon, Israel says it has finished a tunnel-demolition campaign it has run for months.

1. Yemen / the death toll. Yemen’s Human Rights Ministry says 150 civilians have been killed and more than 200 wounded in fighting between the Houthis and government-aligned forces since 3 September — the clearest official casualty figure yet for this month’s escalation. — KSAT/AP; NBC News, 12–14 September.

2. Lebanon. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Friday that the military has completed destroying the tunnel network under the Ali Taher ridge in southern Lebanon, which Israel says Hezbollah built with Iranian funding. — Associated Press, 12 September.

See this week’s Middle East Analysis issue for the fuller Yemen and Lebanon picture, including the Gaza roadmap’s status.

III · The Great Powers

The balance of power today

Iran gets a clear win from a war it did not fight directly: the Houthis’ Red Sea gains, per NBC News, are “a dramatic boost to their backers in Iran.”

1. Iran / the Houthis. NBC News reported this week that the Houthis’ completed hold on Yemen’s Red Sea coastline delivers “a dramatic boost to their backers in Iran” — a concrete illustration of how a client’s battlefield gains translate directly into a patron’s regional leverage, at zero cost to Tehran’s own forces. — NBC News, 12 September.
