I · Horn of Africa<\/h2>\n

Horn of Africa today<\/p>\n

The war’s civilian toll rose again in Kordofan while South Sudan’s incumbent locked in his re-election bid. The fixed point ahead is the 12 September Security Council vote on a Sudan-wide arms embargo.<\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> Sudan \/ North Kordofan.<\/strong> The Sudanese Doctors Network says Rapid Support Forces fighters attacked the villages of Al-Qaa and Al-Kawakiti, west of Bara, on Saturday evening, executed five young men, looted livestock and homes, and displaced more than 3,000 people — some of whom reached western Omdurman in critical condition. The RSF has leaned on such raids and on drones since the army retook the Omdurman–El Obeid supply road on 27 July. — Sudan Tribune, 30 August.<\/span><\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> Sudan \/ United Nations.<\/strong> The Darfur arms embargo under Resolution 1591 expires on 12 September, forcing a Security Council vote on the United States’ draft to extend it to all of Sudan and to name drones and unmanned-aerial-vehicle technology explicitly. Sudan, China and Russia oppose the measure. — France24; Radio Tamazuj.<\/span><\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> South Sudan.<\/strong> President Salva Kiir confirmed he will run in the 22 December election, the country’s first since independence, calling it a chance to end transitional rule. First Vice-President Riek Machar remains under house arrest in Juba on treason and crimes-against-humanity charges that his party says are politically motivated, and it is still unclear whether he will be allowed to stand. — Dawan Africa; PBS NewsHour.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the Horn — no new development cleared verification in the last 48 hours on the Ethiopia–Tigray border, the Amhara and Oromia fronts, or Somalia’s AUSSOM handover. Those stand as reported in Weekly Update Issue No. 4.<\/p>\n

II · Middle East<\/h2>\n

Middle East today<\/p>\n

Lebanon’s army must table a plan to disarm Hezbollah today. Gaza’s ceasefire is holding in name only as Israel and Hamas trade strikes and violation claims, and the Strait of Hormuz is contested again.<\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> Lebanon.<\/strong> The Lebanese Armed Forces are due today to deliver the plan to disarm Hezbollah that the government ordered on 7 August under United States pressure. The US special envoy says the plan will not necessarily involve military action; Hezbollah rejects disarmament while Israeli forces remain in southern Lebanon. — Deccan Herald; US Special Envoy statement.<\/span><\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> Gaza.<\/strong> Israeli strikes on Saturday killed two Hamas Nukhba operatives in Khan Younis and a Hamas operative in Deir al-Balah, which the military said were violations of the October 2025 ceasefire; Gaza medics said a three-year-old boy was also killed. Turkey, Egypt and Qatar condemned Israeli strikes that they said had killed at least sixteen Palestinians since Tuesday. — The Times of Israel, 30 August; FDD.<\/span><\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> Syria \/ Turkey.<\/strong> Israel bombed a Syrian airbase it said Turkish troops were about to deploy to, then accused Ankara of “dangerous adventures in Syria.” Turkey told Israel to halt its “reckless” attacks. 4.<\/strong> Strait of Hormuz.<\/strong> The United Arab Emirates said Iran attacked a vessel operated by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company while it was transiting the strait. The waterway remains contested alongside the Red Sea corridor. No new Houthi attack on Red Sea shipping was verified in the last 48 hours; the most recent remains the 24 August strike on the Saudi tanker Amzan<\/em> off Yanbu. — FDD Overnight Brief.<\/span><\/p>\n

III · The Great Powers<\/h2>\n

The balance of power today<\/p>\n

Washington is pressing two disarmament tracks at once — Hezbollah in Lebanon, the RSF’s suppliers at the UN — while a new Saudi–Türkiye–Pakistan defence pact and open Türkiye–Israel friction redraw the middle-power map.<\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> United States.<\/strong> The Trump administration is driving today’s Lebanon disarmament deadline through envoy Tom Barrack, and at the Security Council is pushing the draft to extend the Sudan arms embargo nationwide and name drones before it lapses on 12 September. Russia and China are resisting the Sudan measure, with Moscow unwilling to see the Sudanese army constrained. — Deccan Herald; France24.<\/span><\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> Saudi Arabia · Türkiye · Pakistan.<\/strong> President Trump publicly praised the trilateral defence pact the three signed earlier this month — an arrangement that ties a Gulf oil power, a NATO member and a nuclear-armed state into one security understanding. — FDD Overnight Brief.<\/span><\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> Türkiye · UAE · Russia.<\/strong> Ankara and Israel are now trading threats openly over Syria. The UAE’s accusation against Iran over the Hormuz vessel keeps Abu Dhabi on the front line of the Gulf standoff. And in eastern Libya, the Haftar authorities — backed by the UAE and Russia — brokered the release of an American missionary held by an Islamic State affiliate in the Sahel, escorting him out through Libya: a rare point of United States–Haftar cooperation. — FDD Overnight Brief.<\/span><\/p>\n
