I · Horn of Africa<\/h2>\n

Horn of Africa today<\/p>\n

The UN named the foreign networks arming Sudan’s war, just days before the Security Council must vote on the arms embargo. In Ethiopia, fighters tried to take a town in Amhara.<\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> Sudan \/ United Nations.<\/strong> UN human rights investigators said on Thursday that outside networks are recruiting fighters, moving weapons, and giving other help to the Rapid Support Forces. They called for someone to be held responsible. The report comes just before the Security Council must vote on extending Sudan’s arms embargo, which ends on 12 September. — UN News; Washington Post, 3 September.<\/span><\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> Ethiopia \/ Amhara.<\/strong> Addis Standard reported that Fano fighters tried to take the town of Weldiya in the Amhara region. Some accounts say Tigray forces fought alongside them; the federal government denies this. Neither side’s account is independently confirmed yet. — Addis Standard.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the Horn — Somalia’s handover of AUSSOM bases to its own army, and South Sudan’s approach to its 22 December election, continue as reported in Weekly Update Issue No. 4. No new development cleared verification in the last 48 hours.<\/p>\n\n

II · Middle East<\/h2>\n

Middle East today<\/p>\n

Southern Lebanon is the hot edge of the war that began with February’s strike on Iran. UN peacekeepers say the border area is getting worse. Iran warned the US not to let Israel attack a ridge where Iranian soldiers stand with Hezbollah.<\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> Lebanon.<\/strong> UN peacekeepers say the security situation along the Blue Line is getting much worse. The UN spokesperson said Israeli forces are expanding their presence there, which breaks the Security Council resolution behind the ceasefire. — UN News, 3 September.<\/span><\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> Lebanon \/ Iran.<\/strong> Iran said it would respond with force if Israel attacks a ridge in southern Lebanon where Iranian soldiers are helping Hezbollah. This shows Iran still has troops on this front, seven months into the war. — The Times of Israel; FDD Overnight Brief, 3 September.<\/span><\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> Gaza.<\/strong> Aid workers moved hundreds of pallets of supplies into Gaza, including baby food and school bags. The World Health Organization said more than 13,000 patients have now been moved out of Gaza for medical care. — UN News, 3 September.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

III · The Great Powers<\/h2>\n

The balance of power today<\/p>\n

Xi and Putin met in Bishkek for a summit of their bloc, while Washington pushed a different plan at the UN — a Sudan arms embargo that names drones. Moscow and Beijing are against it. The contest over Sudan is also a contest between blocs.<\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> China · Russia · the SCO.<\/strong> Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin met at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek. They said they will keep building on last year’s plan from Tianjin — closer trade, energy and technology ties. Reports say India’s Modi is trying to stay balanced between the two bigger powers in the group. — Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs; The Diplomat, 1 September.<\/span><\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> United States · Russia · China.<\/strong> At the UN Security Council, the United States wants to extend Sudan’s arms embargo to the whole country and name drones directly. Russia and China are against it. This is the same line-up that will matter when the vote happens on 12 September. — France24; Radio Tamazuj.<\/span><\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> The Iran front.<\/strong> It has been six months since the strike that killed Iran’s supreme leader. The United States and Iran are still not talking to each other directly. Instead, they are testing each other through the fighting in Lebanon — a sign of how far a great power’s reach can go, and where it stops. — Britannica; Al Jazeera.<\/span><\/p>\n\n
