The UN envoy was joined in Khartoum by the full Quintet of mediators, a leaked military dossier put new detail behind allegations that Sudan’s army built a secret chlorine-bomb programme, and the arms-embargo deadline is now three days away. In Juba, President Kiir cleared a legal path to December’s election.<\/p>\n
1.<\/strong> Sudan \/ UN-Quintet diplomacy.<\/strong> UN envoy Pekka Haavisto was joined in Khartoum this week by envoys from the “Quintet” mechanism — the African Union, European Union, IGAD and the League of Arab States — for political consultations that ran 8–9 September. They met Transitional Sovereignty Council chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and a range of political and civil figures, including Sudanese Congress Party leader Omar al-Daqir, who urged the mechanism to remain “a facilitator of the political process rather than determine its rules, agenda or participation criteria” and pressed for simultaneous tracks on ceasefire, humanitarian access and politics. — Darfur24, 9 September; allAfrica, 8 September.<\/span><\/p>\n2.<\/strong> Sudan \/ chemical-weapons allegation.<\/strong> The New York Times and The Washington Post published joint investigations, based on roughly 150 leaked files, alleging Sudan’s army built a chlorine-munitions programme from 2024, with prototype warheads holding about 33 pounds of chlorine each and roughly 300 munitions allegedly stockpiled at Merowe airport by October 2024; the reports also allege chlorine was diverted from a water-treatment plant in Omdurman and that Gen. al-Burhan ordered evidence destroyed. Sudan’s authorities reject the allegations and say they adhere to the Chemical Weapons Convention. This remains a leaked-document allegation, not an independently verified finding. — Radio Tamazuj, 8 September, citing NYT\/Washington Post reporting.<\/span><\/p>\n3.<\/strong> Sudan \/ the arms embargo.<\/strong> The Darfur arms ban expires 12 September — three days away. Israeli strikes killed at least nine people across southern Lebanon in the worst single day of fighting there in weeks. In the Gulf, the tanker war between the United States and Iran ground on with no sign of a diplomatic track.<\/p>\n
1.<\/strong> Lebanon.<\/strong> Israeli strikes on 7 September hit Kfar Roummane and other villages in southern Lebanon, killing at least nine people — eight in a single strike on a residential building in Kfar Roummane, plus a paramedic killed in a separate strike on a vehicle — including a child and two women. Israel’s military said it was retaliating for Hezbollah drone attacks; its Foreign Ministry accused Hezbollah of “attempting to rebuild its military capabilities in southern Lebanon.” Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said the escalation endangered the US-brokered ceasefire reached in June and called for international pressure on Israel to stop the strikes. — Vatican News, 7 September; Haaretz.<\/span><\/p>\n2.<\/strong> Iran \/ Strait of Hormuz.<\/strong> The tanker war reported in Monday’s briefing continued into this week, with no confirmed new diplomatic contact between Washington and Tehran. The Security Council’s Sudan deadline is now inside a week, with the United States, Russia and China still apart. In the Gulf, Washington and Tehran remain locked in a tanker war neither side shows interest in talking its way out of.<\/p>\n
1.<\/strong> United States · Russia · China.<\/strong> With three days left before Sudan’s Darfur arms embargo expires, the Council split reported all week persists: Washington wants the ban widened to the whole country and drones named explicitly; Moscow and Beijing resist. The newly reported chemical-weapons allegation against Sudan’s army adds pressure on the Council to act, though it has not moved either side’s public position. — Security Council Report.<\/span><\/p>\n2.<\/strong> United States · Iran.<\/strong> The tanker war in the Gulf continues with neither government signalling a return to talks.
