Sudan\u2019s arms embargo now expires in a single day, with no vote yet held. In Khartoum, the UN\u2019s envoy pushed for a prisoner exchange, and mediators opened a new political track that leaves the warring generals out.<\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> Sudan \/ the arms embargo.<\/strong> The Darfur arms ban expires tomorrow, 12 September. The United States still wants it renewed, widened to cover all of Sudan, and extended to name drones; Russia and China resist a wider ban. No vote had been scheduled as of Friday. \u2014 Security Council Report, September 2026 forecast.<\/span><\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> Sudan \/ diplomacy.<\/strong> The UN Secretary-General\u2019s envoy, Pekka Haavisto, met Sovereign Council chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Prime Minister Kamil Idris and Justice and Equality Movement leader Jibril Ibrahim in Khartoum on Sunday. He pushed for an exchange of prisoners and civilian detainees with the Red Cross, and said he hoped to keep meeting toward that goal. Separately, envoys from the UN, African Union, IGAD, European Union and Arab League \u2014 together known as the \u201cQuintet\u201d \u2014 opened talks with an independent Sudanese panel on a civilian-only political dialogue that would leave the warring generals out. \u2014 allAfrica; Darfur24, 8\u20139 September.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the Horn \u2014 Human Rights Watch warned on Wednesday that rising tension in Ethiopia\u2019s Tigray region is testing the African Union\u2019s peace machinery, with grievances from the 2022 settlement resurfacing faster than AU monitors can absorb them. No new development cleared verification on Somalia\u2019s AUSSOM handover or South Sudan\u2019s election track in the last 48 hours.<\/p>\n

II \u00b7 Middle East<\/h2>\n

Middle East today<\/p>\n

Israel closed Britain\u2019s consulate in Jerusalem and cut other ties this week, hitting back at a UK-led ban on goods from Israeli settlements. In south Lebanon, Israel says it has now destroyed a Hezbollah tunnel network it fought over for months.<\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> Israel \/ the United Kingdom.<\/strong> Israel ordered Britain to close its consulate in East Jerusalem within 30 days, barred twelve British officials from entering the country, removed UK representatives from a Gaza aid-coordination centre, and ended British training of Palestinian Authority security forces. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar called Britain\u2019s move \u201cmorally distorted\u201d and interference \u201cin the affairs of a sovereign state.\u201d The trigger: Britain, France and Canada banned imports of goods made in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, and Britain accused settlers of \u201cethnic cleansing.\u201d \u2014 Haaretz; The Japan Times; The Jerusalem Post, 8\u20139 September.<\/span><\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> Lebanon.<\/strong> Israel\u2019s military released footage of troops clearing tunnels under the Ali al-Taher ridge near Nabatieh, then said it had destroyed the underground complex \u2014 a Hezbollah stronghold it had fought over for months. Strikes continued elsewhere in the south; a drone strike killed a motorcyclist at Zebdine on Tuesday. \u2014 The Times of Israel, 10 September.<\/span><\/p>\n

The balance of power today<\/p>\n

Washington stayed out of the Israel\u2013Britain rupture, just as it stayed out of the sanctions that caused it. And when Saudi Arabia asked the United States to strike Yemen\u2019s Houthis directly, Washington said no.<\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> United States \u00b7 Saudi Arabia.<\/strong> President Trump turned down a request from Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for the United States to carry out direct strikes on Houthi forces in Yemen, according to reports Friday. American advisers are already helping Saudi Arabia\u2019s own strikes on the Houthis, with roughly 100 US personnel in the kingdom \u2014 but Washington drew a line at doing the fighting itself. \u2014 The Times of Israel, 11 September.<\/span><\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> United States \u00b7 Israel \u00b7 the United Kingdom.<\/strong> Washington did not intervene in the sanctions dispute or in Israel\u2019s retaliation against Britain, continuing the pattern from earlier this week when the White House chose not to block the UK-led sanctions in the first place.
