Politics, Security, and Conflict in the Horn of Africa

The Horn of Africa is one of the most strategically significant and politically complex regions in the world. The region’s political landscape has been shaped by state formation processes, identity politics, resource competition, interstate relations, security challenges, and geopolitical rivalries. Understanding these dynamics is essential for students of Governance Studies, International Relations, Political Science, Security Studies, and Public Administration.

This course provides a comprehensive examination of the political, security, and conflict dynamics of the Horn of Africa. It explores the historical foundations of the region, the development of states and political institutions, the role of ethnicity, identity, and nationalism, the impact of political economy and resource politics, and the nature of interstate and intra-state conflicts. The course further examines regional security, geopolitics, external actors, peacebuilding, governance, and contemporary political developments affecting the region.

Using both theoretical and practical approaches, the course introduces students to major political and security issues facing Ethiopia, Somalia, Somaliland, Djibouti, Eritrea, Sudan, and South Sudan. Students will analyze real-world cases and develop critical understanding of regional political processes, governance challenges, conflict dynamics, and opportunities for peace and development.

The course is designed to strengthen students’ analytical, research, and policy evaluation skills while enhancing their understanding of the political realities and strategic importance of the Horn of Africa.
