African Union Law and Regional Integration is a seminar-based Master’s course designed to provide students with advanced knowledge of the legal, institutional, political, security, human rights, and economic dimensions of the African Union.
The course examines the African Union as a continental legal and institutional system created to address Africa’s shared challenges, including sovereignty, governance, unconstitutional changes of government, conflict, human rights protection, development, trade, and regional cooperation.
Students will study the foundations of African regionalism, the AU Constitutive Act, AU organs and decision-making, sovereignty and the principle of non-indifference, the African Peace and Security Architecture, democracy and constitutional governance, the African human rights system, and African economic integration through the African Continental Free Trade Area.
The course also gives special attention to real African cases and examples, including AU responses to coups, peace support operations, regional human rights cases, and the implementation challenges facing AfCFTA. It helps students understand African regional integration not as a copy of other regional models, but as a legal and political project shaped by Africa’s history, institutions, security realities, development needs, and search for collective agency.
